Film Production Insurance in India: What a Package Policy Actually Covers
A feature film or web series is a crores-wide bet placed on weather, health, equipment and public spaces — none of which a producer controls. An Entertainment Production Package Policy bundles the covers a shoot needs into a single policy tied to the production schedule.
The core sections
- Cast Insurance — re-shoot or completion costs if a named artist or key person cannot perform due to accident, illness or death
- Production Equipment — cameras, lenses, sound, lighting and generators against accidental damage, fire and theft, on set and in transit
- Props, Sets & Wardrobe — damage or loss of sets, props and costumes during the shoot
- Extra Expenses — the additional cost of completing the production after insured damage
- Public Liability — third-party injury or property damage at shoot locations
- Group Personal Accident — accidental death and disability cover for cast and crew
- Money Insurance — cash on set and in transit for production expenses
Cancellation — the section producers ask about first
Shoot cancellation cover responds when a schedule is cancelled, postponed or abandoned due to defined perils: unseasonal rain (usually with a per-day limit for a set number of days), national mourning, declared strikes, bandhs and curfews, and terrorism. Note that seasonal monsoon is treated as expected weather — the cover is for unseasonal rain, and the monsoon window is defined differently for Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions. Pandemic, lockdown and communicable-disease losses are standard exclusions.
Endorsements that matter
- Stunt Cover Extension — for action sequences, with its own excess
- Kidnapping Cover — for artists and key persons
- Production Abandonment — when the production cannot be completed at all
- Post-Production Cover — extends protection into the edit-and-delivery phase
- Political Strikes — declared bandhs and curfews that halt shooting
Before the first shot
Insurers bind these policies on conditions that producers must take seriously: declare the full cast and crew list and any additional insureds before binding; confirm lead cast are in good health at inception; check cameras and equipment are in working order before shooting; and follow government SOPs at every location. Miss these, and an otherwise valid claim can stumble.
Treat the premium as a line item in the production budget — a small percentage that protects the other hundred.
